DIY fly traps that you can make at home

There are a variety of DIY fly traps that you can make at home, from one that uses a jar to one with a plastic bottle. All you need to do is get some water and the necessary ingredients, fill up the jar or place the plastic bottle over the opening and let nature take its course! Here are all of them!

The Jar Fly Trap

One of the simplest fly traps that you can make at home is the jar fly trap. For this one, all you need is a wide-mouth jar, water, and bait.

Fill the jar with water and bait, such as apple cider vinegar or rotting fruit. Make sure the bait is suspended in the water and not touching the bottom of the jar. Next, take a piece of paper and roll it into a cone. Place the cone in the jar so that the pointy end is touching the water and the rest of the paper is sticking out of the top. The flies will be attracted to the bait and will crawl down the paper cone to get to it. Once they’re in, they won’t be able to crawl back out and will drown in the water.

The Bucket Fly Trap

For this fly trap, you’ll need a bucket, water, and bait.

Fill the bucket with water and bait, such as apple cider vinegar or rotting fruit. Make sure the bait is suspended in the water and not touching the bottom of the jar. Next, take a piece of paper and roll it into a cone. Place the cone in the bucket so that the pointy end is touching the water and the rest of the paper is sticking out of the top. The flies will be attracted to the bait and will crawl down the paper cone to get to it. Once they’re in, they won’t be able to crawl back out and will drown in the water.

The Sticky Tape Fly Trap

This fly trap is made from a piece of sticky tape and a plastic lid.

Cut a piece of sticky tape that’s about 12 inches long. Fold it in half so that the sticky sides are facing each other. Next, cut a small hole in the center of the plastic lid. The hole should be big enough for the flies to crawl through, but not so big that they can escape. Place the sticky tape around the edge of the hole, making sure that the sticky sides are facing out. The flies will be attracted to the bait and will crawl into the hole. Once they’re in, they’ll be stuck to the sticky tape and won’t be able to escape.

You can use any type of sticky tape for this fly trap, but duct tape or packing tape works well. You can also add a little bit of bait to the inside of the trap to help attract the flies.

The DIY Window Screen Fly Trap

This fly trap is made from a window screen and some fishing line.

Cut a piece of window screen that’s about 12 inches square. Next, cut a piece of fishing line that’s about 24 inches long. Fold the window screen in half so that the sticky sides are facing each other. Place the fishing line across the center of the screen, making sure that there’s about 6 inches of fishing line on each side. The flies will be attracted to the bait and will crawl into the hole. Once they’re in, they’ll be stuck to the window screen and won’t be able to escape.

You can use any type of window screen for this fly trap, but plastic or metal works best. You can also add a little bit of bait to the inside of the trap to help attract the flies.
